Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh: Three things to know

  1. The Hokies are in a tailspin, losers of the past two games, each heartbreakers. They appeared to have a win against Liberty Nov. 7, but head coach Justin Puente’s timeout canceled what appeared to be a Virginia Tech touchdown on a blocked Liberty field-goal attempt with the scored tied 35-all in the final seconds. The Flames eventually booted the game-winner. Then last week, the Hokies let a 24-13 third-quarter lead slip away in a 25-25 home loss to Miami in excruciating fashion.
  2. The Hokies are just 1-3 ATS in the past four games as a favorite, and they’re 0-2 SU in the past two. On the road, they’re 1-2 ATS as a favorite, too.
  3. Pittsburgh is coming off a bye after spanking Florida State 41-17 back on Nov. 7 in Tallahassee. It was the Panthers’ first cover against an FBS team this season after going 0-5-1 ATS in the previous six. The Over has cashed in five in a row for Pitt.

Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pittsburgh 30, Virginia Tech 27

Money line (ML)

PITTSBURGH (+130) is a good value at home against a Virginia Tech (-162) side which is reeling. The Panthers are rested, and they looked very good at FSU last time out.

Against the spread (ATS)

PITTSBURGH +3.5 (-110) is a tremendous play on their home field as short dogs. The Panthers have owned the Hokies in this series recently, at least against the number. The Panthers are 6-0 ATS in their past six home games against the Hokies, and 10-2 ATS in the past 12 in the series overall. The home team is also 7-2 ATS in the past nine, and the underdog is 9-3 ATS across the past 12.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 54.5 (-110) is only worth a light bet. Pitt is on a 5-0 Over run, and the Over has hit in four of the past five meetings at Heinz Field. The Over is also 5-1 in Va. Tech’s past six roadies, and 6-2 in its past eight as a favorite, too.
