Vikings elevate two players from the active roster to the practice squad

The Vikings elevated QB Sean Mannion and RB Ameer Abdullah from the practice squad to the active roster.

Sean Mannion served as the Vikings’ backup quarterback in 2019 and 2020. Minnesota OC Klint Kubiak called Mannion an “extra coach” for his ability to understand the game.

Now, Minnesota gets that coach back on sideline Sunday. The Vikings, who signed Mannion to the practice squad this offseason, elevated him to the active roster, the team announced on Saturday.

This makes sense when you what the Vikings have at quarterback. Minnesota  has Kirk Cousins as the clear starter, but after that it’s just Kellen Mond, a rookie who struggled at times in the preseason. Mannion isn’t exactly Patrick Mahomes, but he’s probably a better option to come in and play than Mond is right now, in case Cousins goes down with an injury.

Minnesota also elevated RB Ameer Abdullah to the active roster. Abdullah is a veteran who has returned kicks for the Vikings in the past. He also offers something as a receiving running back.

A little note about the practice squad: You cannot bring up the same player more than twice in a season, unless you want to sign that player to the active roster. The Vikings can’t just keep elevating Mannion and Abdullah week after week, but they could make space on the roster for them eventually.
