Former Evansville forward DeAndre Williams announced on Friday that he will be transferring to play for head coach Penny Hardaway at the University of Memphis.
Williams chose Memphis over several other high-profile programs, including Kentucky, Arkansas and Baylor. He will likely seek a waiver from the NCAA in order to be immediately eligible to play next season. If unsuccessful, Williams would be forced to sit out the 2020-21 season.
Williams arrived at Evansville prior to the 2018-19 season but was ruled ineligible to play by the NCAA. He was forced to miss the entire 2018-19 season but was enrolled in classes and was permitted to participate in practice. He was classified as a sophomore this past season.
The 6-foot-9 prospect averaged 15.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and one block in 18 games played during the 2019-20 season. He emerged as an excellent pick-and-pop option at Evansville after averaging 1.18 points per possession on offense, which ranked among the leaders in the nation.
With Williams now in the fold, the Tigers pick up a big addition in the frontcourt that should help with the losses of James Wiseman and Precious Achiuwa to the NBA.
