Heading into their Monday night matchup with the Washington Wizards, the San Antonio Spurs had won two games in a row and were looking to earn their first three-game win streak of the season. They had just taken down the first-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night and were riding high.
And through the first three quarters of their game against the Wizards, the Spurs were in control. They had led by as many as 14 points and were in front for most of the fourth, too. But at the end of the game, Washington surged forward and ended up taking home a 118-113 win over San Antonio.
The Wizards outscored the Spurs 31-20 in the final frame, and after the contest, Victor Wembanyama spoke about how San Antonio needs to improve their mentality from game to game.
“We’ve got to get strong mentally to get to the next game,” Wembanyama said via ESPN. “A seemingly easier game than the previous one, we still need to come in with the same motivation. I think we maybe were mentally tired because of the two last efforts but we’ve got to get strong because it’s not acceptable.”
Wembanyama finished the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and three blocks while shooting 9-of-19 from the field and -of-4 from behind the three-point line.
Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 24 points, and Cedi Osman chipped in with a nice game as well, as he ended with 20 points off the bench.
Meanwhile, the Wizards won with a well-rounded effort, as six different players put up at least 10 points but nobody finished with more than 18.
