NEW YORK — Former University of Tennessee tennis player Tennys Sandgren saw his run in the Western and Southern Open come to an end when he lost in the Round of 16 to Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-4.
With the win Tuesday afternoon, Djokovic, the world’s No. 1 player, improved to 20-0 this year.
The Western and Southern Open is the first tournament to be contested in nearly five months as the sport has been shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sandgren had seven aces in the match. He also registered three double faults and won six service games.
He was 0-for-4 in break points and won just 14 receiving points.
Sandgren had wins in the tournament over Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime and Lorenzo Sonego of Italy.
