VFL Matt Ramsey named baseball coach at East Hamilton.

OOLTEWAH — A former University of Tennessee baseball player and Knoxville Area prep star has returned to the Volunteer State to coach high school baseball.

Matt Ramsey, a former pitcher and outfielder for the Volunteers and graduate of Farragut High School, has spent the last several years playing professional baseball.

Now, he is back and will be the head baseball coach at East Hamilton High School in Ooltewah.

After playing high school baseball for the Admirals and legendary baseball coach Tommy Pharr, Ramsey was drafted in the 46th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians.

Ramsey, however, did not sign, opting to play for the Diamond Vols. He was again drafted out of UT by Tampa Bay in 2011. He was the Rays’ 19th-round pick, going 600th overall.

He made one Major League appearance in 2019 for the Los Angeles Angels, pitching one inning and recording one strikeout on April 25, 2019.

The former Vol also played professionally for the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League.
