USA TODAY’s winners and losers from Week 1 of the 2023 season

Week 1 of the 2023 college football season has just one game left, the Labor Day Monday night special between Clemson and Duke. We are joining our other College Wire sites in reviewing the past weekend. USA TODAY Sports columnist Paul Myerberg is doing the same.

In his Week 1 winners and losers piece, Myerberg correctly identifies Colorado as the big story and Deion Sanders as the big winner of the week:

Colorado’s 45-42 win against No. 16 TCU is one of the most eye-opening results from a season opener in recent Football Bowl Subdivision history,” Myerberg wrote.

“Hyped and criticized in nearly equal measure amid a transformative offseason makeover, Deion Sanders delivered a victory that justifies his decision to bring in more than 60 new scholarship players and immediately overhaul what had been one of the worst rosters in the Power Five.”

That’s one huge story from the first full-scale weekend of college football in 2023. Read the rest of Myerberg’s column for a more expansive review of Week 1.
