USA TODAY Sports forecasts Auburn to meet ACC squad in bowl season

Despite dropping four straight games, Auburn is set up to compete in a quality bowl game according to Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports.

Auburn football may be in a rough patch currently but is still in contention to earn a quality bowl bid by season’s end.

The latest bowl forecast from Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports has Auburn earning a trip to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina this season. Their projected opponent? The NC State Wolfpack.

This projection is a bright spot for the Tigers, as Smith has consistently predicted Auburn to play in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa throughout the season. The Duke’s Mayo Bowl bid would ensure that Auburn would play in a bowl game that is set to take place after Christmas against a quality opponent in NC State.

According to Smith’s latest projection, 10 SEC teams are expected to become bowl-eligible this season. He lists Georgia as the lone member of the conference to earn a trip to the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs are predicted to beat Washington in the College Football Playoff Semifinals and could meet Michigan in the CFP National Championship Game.

Auburn currently sits at 3-4 while NC State is 4-3. Auburn has a string of games coming up that will allow them to build confidence and earn bowl eligibility while the Wolfpack will end the season with tough teams such as Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina.
