USA TODAY predicts Tennessee Titans’ record for the 2020 season

Is USA TODAY’s prediction for the Titans better than 9-7?

The Tennessee Titans come off of more momentum than most seasons in recent history heading into 2020.

The team may have finished out the 2019 regular season with the same underwhelming 9-7 finish we’ve seen so many times, but this time, they made it all the way to AFC Championship Game, missing out on a Super Bowl LIV appearance with a 35-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

This year, USA TODAY’s Nate Davis predicts the Titans will finish once again at 9-7 before losing in the first round of the playoffs.

The projection has them finishing at the No. 2 spot in the AFC South, behind the Indianapolis Colts, who Davis has ending the season with an overall record of 11-5.

“They’ve finished 9-7 each of the past four seasons – a first in league history – so why expect anything different now?,” Davis wrote. “The first six weeks bring three dates with 2019 playoff teams – not including a visit from Pittsburgh and a Week 1 trip to the Mile High City – before the Titans hit the road for five of their final seven games to conclude the season.”

The Titans have been one of the league’s most inconsistent teams, and that could continue into 2020, but it’s hard to accurately project how any given team will finish out a season so far ahead of time.

How well the defense comes together as head coach Mike Vrabel plays a larger role in it with the departure of former defensive coordinator Dean Pees, and how well the success of quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry carries into this season will have a lot of bearing on the outcome.
