U.S. Amateur at Bandon Dunes: Tee times, pairings and groups to watch

The U.S. Amateur will be played next week at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in remote Bandon, Oregon.

The best amateurs in the country are headed west.

The U.S. Amateur will be played next week at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in remote Bandon, Oregon. It’s a dream buddies destination, but next week 264 of the top amateurs in the world will make the trip for the first U.S. Amateur ever to be hosted at Bandon Dunes.

Stroke-play qualifying will take place on the Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails courses. After 36 holes, the 64-man match play bracket will then be whittled down exclusively on Bandon Dunes over the course of the next five days.

Tee times and pairings for stroke-play qualifying are listed below, but here are the five groups we’re most interested in:

John Augenstein, Alex Fitzpatrick, John Pak

These three are all veterans of the 2019 Walker Cup. Augenstein and Pak played for the U.S., while Fitzpatrick was a member of the GB&I team.

Spencer Ralston, Cohen Trolio, Palmer Jackson

Call this the U.S. Amateur quarterfinal from 2019, with Trolio advancing one more round to the semifinals. Ralston, who is about to enter his senior year at Georgia, needed no introduction at last year’s tournament, especially after coming off a victory at the Players Amateur. For Trolio, 17, and, Jackson, then an incoming Notre Dame freshman, the U.S. Amateur run was a bit of an entrance.

Scott Harvey, Garrett Barber, Frankie Capan

These three men have all been one half of a winning U.S. Amateur Four-Ball side. That might mean the most this week for Harvey, considering he combined with Todd Mitchell to win the event at Bandon Dunes in May 2019. Barber teamed with Cole Hammer to win in 2018 and Capan won with Ben Wong in 2017.

Tyler Strafaci, Preston Summerhays, Pierceson Coody

This summer’s big winners. Tyler Strafaci won the North & South Amateur and the Palmetto Amateur back-to-back, and Preston Summerhays was the Sunnehnna Amateur champion. Most recently, Coody claimed the Western Amateur title, the event that is perhaps most similar – in length and endurance – as the U.S. Amateur.

Andy Ogletree, Sandy Scott, Cole Hammer

Another Walker Cup group here, with Scott having represented GB&I in 2019 and Ogletree and Hammer having represented the U.S. These three are among the most proven match-play competitors in the field, with Ogletree being the defending U.S. Amateur champion and Hammer having won the 2018 Western Amateur.

Jeff Wilson, Stewart Hagestad, Michael Thorbjornsen

Three USGA titles in this group: Wilson won the 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur, Hagestad the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur and Thorbjorn was the 2018 U.S. Junior winner. There’s a bit of a California connection here, too, with Wilson being a native Californian, Hagestad having played college golf at USC and Thorbjornsen heading to Stanford this year.

Lukas Michel, Noah Goodwin, Bob Royak

The USGA likes to pair its champions together, and this is just another example. Michel is the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, Royak the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion and Goodwin won the U.S. Junior in 2017.
