UNC basketball ranked in ESPN’s Way Too Early Top 25

Here is where ESPN ranks the UNC basketball program in the way too early top 25 for the 2023-24 season.

The UNC basketball program enters a very important offseason after missing the 2023 NCAA Tournament. With UConn cutting down the nets here in April, the focus now shifts to next year and the impact that the transfer portal will have on teams.

Already the transfer portal has been a very active one and that will continue to be the case over the next few months. North Carolina lost six players to the portal but has landed commitments from two. Hubert Davis and his staff will have the task of filling out the roster and getting UNC back to where the program needs to be.

As we get set for what will be a very busy Summer, ESPN believes the Tar Heels will be a top 25 team once next season starts. The website has UNC at No. 19 in their way-too-early top 25.

Will the Tar Heels be able to put the most disappointing season in college basketball behind them? With R.J. Davis and Armando Bacot back in Chapel Hill, there are at least two terrific pieces to build around. Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington are two of the few reserves who didn’t enter the portal, but both are talented. Simeon Wilcher can make an impact as a freshman, too.

The No. 19 ranking is the highest for UNC in any way too early top 25 so far.

A lot of things will change between now and even a few weeks, so this ranking certainly can go up or down. But it’s still nice to see at least a few publications think highly of the Tar Heels again.
