UGA football loses top 2023 nonconference game

Georgia football won’t play at Oklahoma in 2023. Who did the Dawgs schedule in place of the Sooners? Georgia isn’t scheduled to play Oklahoma until the Sooners join the SEC.

The SEC has requested the Georgia Bulldogs and Oklahoma Sooners not play each other during the 2023 football season. Accordingly, the University of Georgia will now no longer play at Oklahoma on Sept. 9, 2023.

Georgia’s 2023 nonconference schedule features home games against UT Martin, Ball State and UAB. Georgia also has a nonconference road trip to rival Georgia Tech.

The biggest loser of this announcement are the fans. Georgia fans will miss out on a fun game between the Bulldogs and Sooners.

However, the two teams will meet when Oklahoma joins the SEC.

The SEC released the following quote regarding the future nonconference schedules for Georgia, Tennessee, and Oklahoma:

The Southeastern Conference has directed the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee to postpone scheduled football games versus Oklahoma because the transition of Oklahoma into the SEC will not allow for the involved institutions to fulfill their respective contractual nonconference home-and-home appearance obligations.

Because the second non-conference game in each of the Georgia-Oklahoma and Tennessee-Oklahoma series is scheduled to take place after Oklahoma joins the SEC in 2025, the conference is directing the postponement of the Georgia at Oklahoma game in 2023 and the Oklahoma at Tennessee game in 2024 until such time that those matchups become part of the conference rotation of games in future years.

Georgia football is without a top nonconference game for the 2023 college football season. Oklahoma added a 2023 game against SMU in place of Georgia.

In lieu of today’s news, the Georgia Bulldogs have scheduled a home game against Ball State for Sept. 9, 2023. Georgia’s chances for an undefeated 2023 college football season just went up.

Why is the 2023 game at Oklahoma cancelled?

Georgia would not have been able to play the return game with Oklahoma in Athens during the 2031 season. The same goes for the Oklahoma-Tennessee series.

Based on today’s news, Georgia probably isn’t going to play Texas in 2028 and 2029 unless it is a part of the expanded SEC’s schedule.
