UCLA women’s water polo win national title

Another national title for UCLA.

The UCLA Women’s Water Polo team won their 8th NCAA title and their 12th national title with a win over California. The Bruins also became just the fifth team in women’s water polo history to go undefeated.

The win was much needed after coming up short three out of the past four seasons.

The Bruins won the total at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The title for the Bruins snapped the streak of back-to-back titles for Stanford. The Bears now have nine in school history with UCLA just behind them. USC has six in school history.

Adam Wright is the head coach of the team, and this is his first women’s title. He also has led the men to four NCAA titles. Wright had this to say following the title, per Thuc Thi Nguyen of The Los Angeles Times:

“It’s been a long time coming, it feels so good to see UCLA back on top because that’s what I was used to when I was at school at UCLA, and I’m just lucky to be a part of it.”

In the championship game, Panni Szegedi led the Bruins with three goals. She finished the season with 39 goals, which was tied for the team lead.
