CAMDEN, N.J. — Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is off to a terrific start to the 2023-24 season as he’s averaging 30.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 50% from the floor and 56% from deep. The first three games have been nearly perfect for him.
However, Maxey still has work to do to be an elite point guard in this league. He is taking over the position and is looking to help push Philadelphia over the hump in the Eastern Conference from a new position.
“I think leading,” Maxey said of what he still needs to do. “Leading with my voice still. That’s still a big thing. Sometimes you miss guys, you gotta be able to tell them like ‘Hey, man, I’m sorry I missed you’ and sometimes, you turn the ball over you got to take that on the chin.”
The good thing for Maxey is the Harden saga is over and the keys to the offense are in his hands. Philadelphia looks to him to lead this group and not only be an elite scorer, but also make plays for others.
Coach Nick Nurse, Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris and others have expressed confidence in the young man’s abilities.
“For me, I just want to go out there and play free, play with a free conscience, and because coach Nurse has been able to bless me with a lot of — he’s installed confidence in myself as well and in the work that I’ve put in so I’m about to go out there and play with a free mind,” Maxey added. “Joel believes in me, Tobias, all those guys believe in me to go out there and do what I’m able to do. So it’s been great.”
