Ty Montgomery had his second career 100-yard game as a rusher vs. Panthers

New Orleans Saints RB Ty Montgomery rose to the occasion when his team needed him most, running for 105 yards against the Carolina Panthers.

The New Orleans Saints were dramatically shorthanded at running back in Week 17’s game with the Carolina Panthers. They went into the matchup with just two true running backs on the roster between part-time wide receiver Ty Montgomery and Tony Jones Jr., a rookie called up from the practice squad. And Jones exited just minutes into the game with an undisclosed injury.

So all the more credit to Montgomery, who ran 18 times for 105 rushing yards on the day. He also caught his lone target as a receiver to pick up 2 yards through the air. But his efforts on the ground were impressive — so much so that he surpassed the 100 rushing yards mark for just the second time in his NFL career.

That’s something he hadn’t done since Dec. 18, 2016, totaling 16 carries for 162 rushing yards and a pair of touchdown runs. He was suiting up for the Green Bay Packers at the time and his skills powered them to a 30-27 win over their longtime rivals, the Chicago Bears.

Incidentally, that same Bears team is who Montgomery will be playing against next week in the Wild-Card Round. Maybe he can continue to shoulder the load, even with the Saints hoping to get Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, and the rest of their running backs back from the COVID-19 reserve list.
