Minnesota’s offensive line has drawn criticism from fans, much of which has been warranted.
But the position group improved in 2019. Dalvin Cook ran for 1,135 rushing yards. The group struggled at times in protection, but another year of improvement could lead to solid, consistent blocking up front in 2020.
ESPN asked NFL executives to list players they thought were underrated by some. The Vikings offensive line was well represented, with Brian O’Neill and Garrett Bradbury being named on the list of players.
Here’s what one executive said about Bradbury and Saints center Erik McCoy:
“McCoy is stronger; Bradbury is probably more of a nimble athlete overall. They can do different things, but both will be highly effective. I expect them to be good for a long time.”
Here’s what a scout said about O’Neill:
“His technique has improved from what I’ve seen,” said an NFC scout. “He’s really athletic, especially for an RT. Very good fit for a zone-blocking scheme, stronger and tougher now than people expected when he came out. Has left tackle attributes, but needs to be more consistent.”
O’Neill and Bradbury getting recognized by people around the NFL is a good sign. The Vikings will need those two for solidifying an offensive line that lost a starter this offseason. Minnesota terminated starting right guard Josh Kline’s contract. O’Neill and Bradbury having big years could help the new starter and the offense as a whole. Let’s see if it happens.
