Trey Murphy III sets Pelicans franchise rookie 3-point record

Murphy on Friday became the seventh rookie this season to record at least 30 points in a game.

Trey Murphy III on Friday set new career-highs in points and rebounds to lead the New Orleans Pelicans in a 142-120 loss at home to the Charlotte Hornets.

Murphy erupted for 32 points, nine rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes off of the bench. He shot 12-of-20 from the field and became the first rookie in franchise history to hit seven 3-pointers in a game, surpassing the previous record of six. He went 7-of-12 from beyond the arc.

With the performance, Murphy is just the fifth Pelicans rookie to register a 30-point game, joining Darren Collison, J.R. Smith, Marcus Thornton and Zion Williamson. He is the seventh rookie this season to record a 30-point game.

The result versus the Hornets was certainly not what the Pelicans wanted, but the outing by Murphy gave the team at least one positive to carry into its next game. Murphy entered the season known to be a knock-down shooter and the 17th pick showed just that on Friday.
