49ers wide receiver Trent Sherfield ran a perfect route to get behind the Chiefs defense. All quarterback Trey Lance had to was get the ball to him. That wasn’t a problem for the rookie, and Sherfield made the catch and wasn’t touched en route to an 80-yard touchdown in his debut for the 49ers.
The throw felt like a preview of things to come in San Francisco. Sherfield would agree. He had high praise for Lance in his post-game press conference.
“Being able to play with Trey is an amazing thing,” Sherfield said. “He’s a young phenom. He’s going to be really, really good in this league. Just building that relationship with him is really, really good.”
Sherfield is having a nice training camp after spending his first three seasons primarily as a special teams contributor for the Arizona Cardinals. Now he’s getting a real chance to earn a role on offense with the 49ers and it got off to a roaring start in the preseason opener.
If he continues building a strong relationship with Lance, he could wind up fitting in with the 49ers’ receiving corps for a long time.
