Travis Hunter snubbed in ranking of Pac-12’s top defensive backs

Travis Hunter was ranked surprisingly low on this list of the Pac-12’s top defensive backs

SuperWest Sports writer Jack Follman released his ranking of the Pac-12’s top defensive backs entering 2023 and there was a notable name missing from the upper echelon of his 12-player list.

Well behind Oregon State’s Kitan Oladapo at No. 1 and four spots below Oregon safety Evan Williams, who played at Fresno State last season, stood Colorado cornerback Travis Hunter at No. 8. Yes, Hunter has yet to establish himself at the FBS level, but he was still considered by many to be the best overall transfer portal player this offseason.

Here’s what Follman wrote on Hunter:

The former No. 1 recruit in the nation is now in Boulder and ready to turn into a star in the Pac-12. He’s one of the most exciting players coming into the conference in 2023.

Directly ahead of Hunter on Follman’s list was Washington safety Asa Turner, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention pick from last year.

During his true freshman season at Jackson State, Hunter was far from 100% healthy but still produced two interceptions and 10 pass breakups in eight games played. He was also named a finalist for the annual Jerry Rice Award, which is given to the top freshman in the FCS.
