Tory Taylor honored in Week 1 Ray’s 8 among nation’s best punters

Iowa’s Tory Taylor and Iowa State’s Tyler Perkins were named to “Ray’s 8,” which recognizes the best punters before the Cy-Hawk game.

Corn. Tailgating. And punting. That is what Iowa does.

This year’s Cy-Hawk game could very well provide all three of those things at a high level. The corn and tailgating are a given. The punting requires some studs booting the ball and each team has one of those.

The Iowa Hawkeyes gladly turn to Tory Taylor to pin opponents deep while the Iowa State Cyclones have a punter of their own in Tyler Perkins who wants his name noticed in Iowa. It hasn’t taken long for both of them to be recognized for their talents. The Ray Guy Award, which is given to the nation’s best punter, releases a weekly “Ray’s 8” to recognize the best punters of each week.

Iowa’s Tory Taylor and Iowa State’s Tyler Perkins were each acknowledged for their Week 1 punting performances.

Tory Taylor had six punt attempts for the Hawkeyes against Utah State. He averaged a booming 48.7 yards with a long of 53. He also dropped three of the six punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Taylor put on a punting masterclass.

Tyler Perkins was called upon eight times and averaged a monstrous 53.63 yards per punt with four beyond 50 yards and a long of 70. He downed two of the punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

The Cy-Hawk game this year could be a punting spectacle with these two going back and forth in a field position battle.
