Tony’s Take: Isaac Hurtado could be primed for breakout season

Not many expected Isaac Hurtado to be one of the first Buffs to earn their number, but the former JUCO linebacker has stood out to Coach Prime’s staff this spring

Another four Colorado Buffaloes players earned their jersey numbers on Tuesday, and a surprising name was among them. Linebacker Isaac Hurtado, who will don No. 29 next season, became one of only seven players to have earned their number so far this spring.

It’s hard to see that and not think that Hurtado is primed for a breakout season on defense, special teams or both. A junior college transfer from the 2022 class, Hurtado played his first college year at Fullerton community college, where he was all over the field with 45 total tackles, nine TFLs, five sacks and two forced fumbles. Though he only played a handful of snaps last season, former Buffs head coach Karl Dorrell spoke glowingly about the linebacker room that Hurtado joined.

CU coaches have shared what it takes to earn a number, and this has to be a positive sign for the development of Hurtado’s game under Deion Sanders and his defensive staff. Add all of this up and it looks like Buffs fans might see a lot of No. 29 in 2023.
