Titans should kick the tires on WR-turned-TE Jordan Matthews

The Titans could use more experience in their depth competition at TE.

The Tennessee Titans have been looking for players in unusual places this offseason, taking a look at both a former college wrestler and basketball player. So, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them kick the tires on wide receiver-turned-tight end, Jordan Matthews.

Matthews, 29, was very productive at the wide receiver position over his first three seasons in the NFL, totaling 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns in 46 games.

However, for whatever reason, his production fell off a cliff in the years that followed and he has appeared in just five games since 2019.

The Vanderbilt product recently revealed that he has put on weight (15-plus pounds) and is looking to transition to tight end in 2021.

Matthews was an above-average receiver at the start of his career, and his blocking skills were always solid. Because of those qualities, one would assume Matthews is capable of making a smooth transition.

Not only have the Titans proven they are willing to consider outside-the-box methods to find new players, but they currently have a need at the tight end position.

While Matthews wouldn’t challenge Anthony Firkser or Geoff Swaim for starting snaps, he would be a welcomed addition to the competition for Tennessee’s backup roles, where the team is sorely lacking experience.
