Since the NFL instituted a new helmet rule that would allow teams to wear a secondary helmet to match with throwback jerseys, Tennessee Titans fans have been clamoring for the team to wear the old Houston Oilers setup.
Well, it appears the wheels are in motion for that to happen.
While down at the owner’s meetings this week, Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk revealed that the team is “actively working” to bring the jerseys back “in the near future,” per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.
“Oilers history is Titans history. We know our fans feel passionately about showcasing that legacy on game day, and we’re actively working on making throwback jerseys possible in the near future,” Adams Strunk explained. “Stay tuned!”
In the past, Adams Strunk has been against wearing a Titans helmet with the Oilers jerseys, saying the combination “just wouldn’t make sense.” Now that wearing the Oilers helmet is possible, the throwbacks are inevitable.
As far as when this will happen goes, Wyatt notes in his mailbag that because of NFL rules stipulations the earliest the throwback combination can be worn is in 2023, and that’s the goal for the team right now.
“If all goes according to plan, the Titans will wear light blue jerseys from the Luv Ya’ Blue era with white britches, with an Oilers helmet. Because of league stipulations, the earliest the combination could be worn, however, is 2023, and that’s what franchise is shooting for. Stay tuned for more updates on this down the road,” Wyatt wrote in response to a mailbag question.
This is great news. Those Oilers jerseys are just too good not to use from time to time, and we also get to see Houston Texans fans triggered in the process. This is just a win in every way possible.
