On Saturday, the Tigers’ pitching was not as superb as it was in game one against Tim Corbin’s Vanderbilt squad.
It was the bottom of the first when the scoring began. First baseman Sonny DiChiara hit homerun number nine on the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning.
Things stayed stagnant until the fourth inning when Vanderbilt plated a total of nine runs in one inning. Two homers and three doubles is what brought in the surplus of runs on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers were able to muster two runs in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Nate LaRue hit a two-run homerun to cut the ‘Dores lead to 9-3. After the fourth, Vanderbilt scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.
The pitching for the Tigers in game two was the polar opposite of what we saw in game one when Tim Hudson’s pitching staff allowed just one run. It turns out that the scoring wasn’t quite over just yet. Auburn pushed across one run in the eighth which brought the Commodores lead to 13-4. Preceding the eighth inning, six more runs were scored by the men in black and gold.
The Tigers were held in check in the bottom of the ninth as game two ended in a 19-4 loss for Auburn. It was definitely disappointing to see this performance just a day after Auburn extended their win streak to three games. With 19 runs given up and six walks, the Tigers pitching staff will definitely need to do better in order to win the series in tomorrow’s finale.
The Tigers fall to 21-10 and 6-5 in conference play on the season while the Commodores move to 22-8 and 5-6 in conference play. It has been a rough going for both teams in SEC play thus far, but whoever wins tomorrow’s rubber match should have some momentum leading to their mid-week games.
Game three is scheduled for first pitch at 1 CT on SEC Network+. The winner of tomorrow’s game will take the series.
