Confidence is key in a lot of situations in life and sports are no different. It was apparent early last season that Texas A&M was in trouble from the mound in what essentially should have been “tune-up” games. At points throughout the season, the starting pitcher lineup consisted of “TBD” due to Coach Jim Schlossnagle not knowing how many pitchers we would need to use in a given game.
One staggering stat from last season was the Aggies went almost a month before a starting pitcher made it past the fifth inning of a game. That is a tough way to win games when you have to cycle through so many pitchers early in games. The 2024 season is already off to a much better start through the first four games and below are the stats from the first four games from both seasons.
2023 season – first four games
- 3-1 record
- 14 runs allowed
- 3 Home runs
- 40 strikeouts
- 14 walks
- 3.56 ERA
2024 season – first four games
- 4-0 record
- 4 runs allowed
- 0 Home runs
- 47 strikeouts
- 7 walks
- 0.53 ERA
The improvement is there statically, and the pitchers also just seem to be throwing with more confidence. The common theme we hear from the pitchers is that new pitching coach Max Wiener making practice fun has helped them settle into what works of them individually. There is still a ton of ball to be played, but this is a great starting point for Coach Wiener and his band of pitchers.
Texas A&M will begin a three-game home series on Friday at 6 p.m. versus Wagner College of Staten Island, New York.
