Tom Brady’s arrival to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers set off some mild controversy when it came to what number he’d wear with his new team. After donning the No. 12 during his 20 years with the Patriots, many wondered whether the future Hall of Famer would get the number from wide receiver Chris Godwin.
In the end, TB12 kept his name and Godwin changed to No. 14. Fans will also be happy to know they won’t have to see Brady in those alarm clock uniforms, as the Bucs unveiled a new look at the beginning of last month, which is a call back to their glory years and easily one of the top uniform redesigns of the offseason.
But while Brady’s Tampa Bay jersey is a hot-ticket item right now, it turns out a newly drafted rookie has been outselling him since the 2020 NFL draft. And, it’s another quarterback playing in Florida: Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa.
Per Nick Shook of NFL.com:
“Tagovailoa is the leading jersey seller in the NFL, according to NFL Shop jersey sales tracked by Fanatics, which powers the league’s merchandising site. Tagovailoa’s aqua No. 1 jersey is selling faster than any other in the NFL, and the white version of that jersey ranks second — ahead of Tom Brady’s new shirts, which come in places 3-5 (with the pewter alternate leading the trio!).
I love the fact that the pewter alternate is the top-selling Brady jersey. Tagovailoa may be the popular new kid on the block right now, but if he can’t stay healthy and produce on the field, those sales numbers will take a hit.
