This preseason quote from Urban Meyer sure didn’t age well at all

This quote is too good. And by good we mean bad.

Christmas came early for Jacksonville Jaguars fans this year when the team’s owner, Shad Kahn, did the right thing and fired head coach Urban Meyer just 13 games into his five-year contract.

Meyer may have been good at the college level but it was obvious from the start in Jacksonville that he was in over his head in the NFL. From bringing in Tim Tebow, to skipping a team flight and having an embarrassing night out in Columbus, Meyer’s brief stint with the Jaguars will go down as one of the worst coaching tenures in league history.

On this week’s episode of USA Today Sports’ “Sports Seriously,” Mackenzie Salmon and I looked back at something Meyer said during an appearance on the show in June and oh man did this thing not age well.

Watch here:

LOL.

Meyer said:

I’ve made it clear to our team – I expect the best version of them. I expect them to be the best version come August. The Jaguars are going to do things a certain way. I expect everyone to be the best version of themselves. That’s our goals for next year. This city is ready to explode. I don’t want to hear how our stadium is bad. I want us to own it. I want a great home-field advantage and for our players to do their part.

So Meyer expected the best version of his players but then failed to lead by that example and now he’s out of a job.

Meyer is really the gift that keeps on giving.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
