The New York Giants went into their coaching search with Josh McDaniels or Baylor’s Matt Rhule as their perceived top targets. But after Rhule took the job with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, New York waited little time to move on a backup plan.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are hiring 38-year-old New England Patriots wide receivers coach Joe Judge.
Judge has been a part of the Patriots organization since 2012, spending a bulk of the time as a special teams assistant and coordinator. While the Patriots’ success is undeniable — Judge was technically a part of that success — NFL fans were beyond perplexed that the Giants went with a candidate who had never held a head-coaching role at any level.
I'm not sure what it says that the only competition for the Giants' new coach was Mississippi State, but I feel like that's bad

Every single Pats receiver either underachieved or badly underachieved this season… but congrats on the Joe Judge hiring Giants fans!

The Giants picked an underqualified 38-year-old Judge, which means the choice was approved by the Federalist Society

Ummm…did the Giants think they were hiring this guy because that would’ve actually made more sense. pic.twitter.com/B8tkk5zDwv

Giants fans: “The Patriots’ wide receivers weren’t very good this year, this candidate coached them and he’s never been more than a special teams coordinator in the NFL, yet you want to hire him?”

The giants hired the Pats WR coach. A team that had NO wide receivers? pic.twitter.com/yA207O1bvL

Joe? I’d rather have Aaron Judge as the Giants head coach. pic.twitter.com/wzEnAiDHOj
