The NFL schedule release is by far the most overhyped thing ever

Can we stop doing this already?

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Charles Curtis.

Happy NFL schedule release day, I guess?

Because, really: This is by far the most overhyped event in all of sports, stretched out over a few days with leaks of your favorite team’s games, who’s playing overseas, who’s opening the season (this year it’s Chiefs-Lions. Not the most scintillating of matchups, but OK!), before it all gets dropped on us Thursday night.

But you already know who your team is playing! Seriously! Here’s a whole list of every team’s opponents in 2023 put together by our Christian D’Andrea, along with all the games we know so far (which is changing by the minute! As I’m writing this, there are games being revealed before the full reveal! Pre-reveals!). Aside from planning purposes, which I get if you want to travel to see your team play or plan a day around going, this is the silliest of exercises, meant to remind you that the NFL owns the sports world even in the midst of the NBA and NHL postseason and early-season baseball.

And they do own it! Will we cover it? Of course we will. The one redeeming thing about this whole thing is the way teams creatively use social media to do it. The Bengals did a great job of this in revealing their Week 17 game against the Chiefs.

That’s fun! Why can’t we have that over five days?
