The NHL playoffs had some history on Tuesday night… some really long history.
The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 1 of their series, which doesn’t sound too crazy at all. But yeah, the Lightning didn’t score the game-winner until the FIFTH overtime.
This was the fourth longest game in NHL history and at points it felt like it might never end. It was so long that it pushed the game scheduled after it (Bruins-Hurricanes, which was scheduled for an 8 p.m. start) to Thursday morning at 11 a.m. because these teams are all playing the same arena.
Seriously, this one was ridiculous. It started at 3 p.m. ET and ended just before 9:30 p.m.
Here was the winner of the Lightning, who had 88(!) shots on goal:

The video boards inside the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto had fun with it:
Even the video board Operators are tired of this game

The Hurricanes had some fun with it, too:
Hey @NHL, not to tattle but we were supposed to play at 8:00 and the @BlueJacketsNHL and @TBLightning won't get off the ice

And so did hockey fans:
If the Lightning hit 88 shots, we go back in time.

All it took for the Tampa Bay Lightning to finally get over the hump was 6.5 hours, 187 shot attempts, and 88 shots on goal

It’s not as sad when you remember beer vendors would have shut down like 4 hours ago https://t.co/t9FsMBszx7
