The latest NFL mock draft from ESPN has the Raiders trading up for Michael Penix Jr. in Round 2

Is Michael Penix Jr. not a first-round QB? In this scenario, yes.

Is Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington a first-round quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft? Or will he drop to Day 2?

We’ve seen some mocks that have him in the first round, with a QB-hungry team trading up for him. In our latest two-round mock draft from Christian D’Andrea, he’s got the New York Giants taking Penix in the second round. And in the latest mock from ESPN and Field Yates, he’s got the Las Vegas Raiders trading up early in the second round to nab Penix, which makes a lot of sense for the franchise.

Here’s his take on how that would work:

One more trade projection here, and it’s for the last remaining quarterback I have ranked in my top 50. After missing out on the top five passers on Day 1 and knowing teams will be eyeing the QBs available here, I have the Raiders sending No. 44 and a 2025 third-rounder to the Commanders for No. 36. …

Penix has a huge arm and threw for 4,903 yards last season. Even after signing Gardner Minshew to compete with Aidan O’Connell, the Raiders have to add a quarterback. Penix has an injury history (knee and shoulder), and teams will have varying levels of comfort there, but his upside is immense.
