The Dallas Cowboys are the gift that keeps on giving and now we need more

We need the Cowboys in the playoffs.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The Dallas Cowboys have had one heck of a season, and I don’t mean that in the nicest of ways because every week has been a wild trip into the great unknown.

But you know what? Andy Dalton and Co. are somehow still alive in the “race” for the NFC East title and I’m all in on them representing the worst division in the postseason this year. Not only that, but they would also be hosting a playoff game in the first round, which makes it all even better.

The Cowboys continue to be a living reality TV show that keeps giving us entertainment — it’s fun when they lose, it’s stunning when they win — and I want more of this action. I need Jerry Jones postseason reaction shots from his luxury suite the way many people need a PS5 in their lives.

The Cowboys started the season with one of the worst defenses you’ve ever seen try to play the game of football. Dak Prescott was able to do enough for a bit to outplay his own defense but then he suffered a devastating injury that ended his season.

Since then we’ve seen Andy Dalton, some guy named Ben DiNucci, and some guy named Garrett Gilbert start at QB for Jerry Jones’ football team.

And somehow they are still alive for a postseason spot. It’s incredible. Well, it helps that they are in the NFC East but those are just details. On Sunday the Cowboys beat the Eagles, thanks to a little bit of help from the refs, and made Week 17 a very intriguing one for three of the four teams in their division.

Here’s what the Cowboys have to do in Week 17 to win the NFC East – they need to beat the Giants in their 1 p.m. ET game at MetLife Stadium and then they have to hope the Eagles beat Washington on Sunday night. If Washington wins it wins the NFC East. If Washington loses, the Cowboys-Giants winner takes the NFC East.

I don’t have any dog in this fight whatsoever but here’s what I do know – Washington and the Giants stink and are incredibly boring to watch play football. Neither team would make their playoff game interesting at all. It would be dreadful television and I hate dreadful television.

The Cowboys looked really good on Sunday and have some good weapons on offense that could make things interesting. Dalton threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday. He still has something left in the tank!

We all must admit it – we want the Cowboys in the playoffs. We need the Cowboys in the playoffs. Well, unless you like Washington or the Giants. Then you probably don’t agree with me at all.

But whatever, the Cowboys are the you-know-what show that keeps on giving and I need more of it in my life come the first week of the playoffs.

– J.J. Watt’s emotional postgame rant about the importance of doing your job and respecting the fans was pretty darn awesome.

– My pal Chris Korman looked at how the Browns are possibly on the brink of an incredible collapse.

– The Clippers were down by a NBA-record 50 points at halftime yesterday and fans had lots of jokes. The Mavs ended up winning the game by 51!
