There are two certainties about the Dallas Cowboys cutting kicker Brett Maher on Monday and signing Kai Forbath.
The first is that it was necessary. Maher had hit just 1-of-4 kicks from 40 yards and beyond the past three games and was an awful 20-of-30 on the season.
The second is that the NFL can be brutal. Because per the Dallas Morning News’s Calvin Watkins, Maher went with a bunch of his soon-to-be-former teammates to some hospitals to visit sick kids … and when he returned, he was cut.
It’s a wonderful good deed that Maher did on Monday, but you’d think someone from the front office would want to tell him before he went out in his uniform to the visits.
Dirty business. Brett Maher went to the hospital visits today spent time with some sick kids. Got on the bus with some teammates and after arriving at The Star he was cut. pic.twitter.com/yzSlSKpWAN

Poor timing but happened this way only because #Cowboys probably allowed him more chances than his performance deserved. https://t.co/1PIQULWQ0A
