The Aggie Volleyball team gets major upset in SEC match-up over No. 4 Florida

The Aggies rally to defeat the No 4 Florida Gators for their first win over a top five team since over 20 years.

On Wednesday, the Texas A&M (10-3, 2-1 SEC) traveled to Gainsville, Florida, to take on the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators and pulled off a major upset with a 3-2 victory.

This game was for the ages as the teams battled back and forth through five sets at Exactech Arena. Florida jumped out quickly, scoring five unanswered points before the Aggies got on the board, closed the gap, and took a brief 17-16 lead. However, the Gators rallied to take the first set 26-24.

The teams split the next two sets putting the Aggies down 1-2 and putting them in a must-win situation on the road against a top-five team in the nation. That didn’t faze coach Morrison’s team and they came to show the NCAA that Aggie Volleyball comes to fight. Even Texas A&M wideout Evan Stewart enjoyed the action.

After digging in the Maroon & White gave the Gator all they could handle for the next to sets. With the game on the line and the Aggies down 8-5 during the final set they ripped off four straight points to take the lead and never looked back. They took the final set 15-13 for a major upset and moved to 2-1 in SEC play.

Head Coach Jamie Morrison after game:

“I’m so proud of my team and the way they showed up tonight. I thought our team made a conscious choice to be a team that would grind and that’s the thing I’m most proud of.”

The Aggies will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Missouri Tigers at Reed Arena in Bryan-College Station.
