The excitement surrounding Texas’ first spring practice came to a sudden halt on Tuesday morning.
Shortly after the Longhorns concluded their first on-field practice of the Steve Sarkisian era, the first-year head coach stated he believed wide receiver Jake Smith suffered a broken foot.
The timetable of his return is unknown at this point. It’s certainly discouraging considering Smith battled through a variety of injuries last season and was expected to start in the slot.
Many fans hoped Sarkisian would utilize Smith and fellow slot receiver Jordan Whittington at the same time. The talented duo can’t seem to stay healthy enough for that to happen.

Smith appeared in seven games last season and hauled in 23 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns. He was sidelined for Texas’ contests against UTEP, Texas Tech and Oklahoma due to injury.
Whittington is one of Texas’ top playmakers and is more than capable of handling slot duties in Smith’s absence. However, Whittington’s injury history provides uncertainty at the position.
