Texas walk-on WR Kai Money listed on depth chart, expected to play

Sophomore walk-on wide receiver Kai Money is expected serve as Jake Smith’s backup in the slot against Texas Tech.

Texas walk-on wide receiver Kai Money may not be a one-hit wonder after all.

Texas was able to spread the ball around at ease in their season opener against UTEP, therefore head coach Tom Herman could afford to dig deep into his roster to allow playing time for several new faces.

Although Texas had a comfortable lead at the time, Money made the most of his opportunities and hauled in four receptions for 26 yards and one touchdown.

Due to the injuries to Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington, Money garnered a spot on Texas’ official depth chart this week. He’s listed as the backup slot receiver behind Jake Smith, along with transfer wide receiver Brenden Schooler.

Considering Money wasn’t even listed on the initial depth chart prior to the UTEP game, he’s made considerable strides to appear as the primary backup in Texas’ conference opener against Texas Tech.

Smith is nursing a hamstring injury and is expected to attempt to run this week. This type of muscle strain can be fragile and linger throughout the season if not completely healed, so it’s unclear how often Smith will be used against the Red Raiders.

Whittington was in line to take over in Smith’s absence, but unfortunately suffered a partially torn meniscus against the Miners. Although Money didn’t play a single snap as a freshman, the sophomore entered the game for Whittington and immediately recorded a touchdown reception at the end of the first half.

If Money can continue to make the most of his limited opportunities, he could become a vital depth piece on Texas’ roster this season.
