One of Texas’ longtime targets for the 2023 recruiting class is now off the board.
Four-star running back Rueben Owens announced his commitment to Louisville via Twitter on Monday. Owens has flirted with numerous schools throughout his recruitment, even verbally committing to the Longhorns for a brief period.
Texas and Texas A&M were seemingly the two favorites to land the El Campo native for quite some time. However, Louisville’s late push was clearly successful as Owens is fresh off an official visit with the Cardinals.

Owens is rated the No. 1 running back in the country for the 2023 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. In 2021, he rushed for 2,989 yards and 46 touchdowns while adding on 15 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
While losing out on talent of this nature certainly stings, Texas is in great shape at running back for the foreseeable future.
