Texas’ Sarkisian uses Notre Dame as cautionary tale for Longhorns ahead of Week 3 UTSA game

Hoping to avoid a letdown, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is using Notre Dame’s stunning loss to Northern Illinois as a cautionary tale.

We’ve all seen Texas Longhorns teams have a ‘letdown game’ after a big win. It almost happened last season against Wyoming.

Last year, after the program altering win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Texas took on Wyoming. The Horns eventually won 31-10, but Ewers had a terrible game, passing for just 131 yards. The Cowboys were actually tied with Texas as late as the third quarter.

It’s hard to imagine that happening to THIS Texas team, but head coach Steve Sarkisian isn’t leaving it to chance. Sark is using Notre Dame’s stunning loss at home to Northern Illinois as a cautionary tale for the Longhorns players.

After holding off Texas A&M in College Station during Week 2, the Irish has risen to No. 5 in the AP Poll and were 20-plus point favorites over NIU. But after losing to the Huskies 16-14 in South Bend, Notre Dame’s college football playoff hopes are in true jeopardy.

According to CBS Sports, Sarkisian said that he has briefed the team on the Notre Dame game, even showing them footage of Northern Illinois players storming the field inside Notre Dame Stadium.

“We’re capable of anything,” Sarkisian said. “We’ve got a really good team. But we’re entitled to nothing. We’re going to earn everything. And we’ve going to have to earn the victory here Saturday night.”

UTSA lost to Texas State 49-10 Saturday. The Roadrunners are having a hard time replacing former longtime QB Frank Harris. But UTSA has won at least nine games each of the past three seasons and have won two C-USA championships.

“The worst opponents, or the toughest opponents to play, are the ones that are wounded and that are backed into a corner,” Sarkisian said. “UTSA has got a very talented team. Really well-coached. Coach Traylor’s done a nice job there and they’re a little wounded coming out of last week, so we know we’re going to get their best shot. We’re going to get their best version.”
