Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger undecided on future

The Texas Longhorns senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger has a decision to make but at this point in the year, he has yet to make it.

There have been five of the seven team captains to jettison from the ship this year. Joseph Ossai, Samuel Cosmi, Caden Sterns, Ta’Quon Graham, and Chris Brown have all decided to go pro and skip the upcoming bowl game. They were recently joined by the Longhorns leading receiver, Brennan Eagles. They haven’t been joined by unofficial team captain, senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

Ehlinger did accept his invitation to participate at the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Take that with a grain of salt. While he has accepted the invitation, he has yet to make a formal announcement about where he plans to be in 2021 at this point in time.

Based on what the panel of experts stated about Ehlinger when asked what Sam needs to show in Mobile, he is far from ready as a quarterback prospect. Would another year in the same system and under the tutelage of Mike Yurcich help Ehlinger? Or would he be better served at the NFL level to develop into an NFL level passer? That is the big question for Ehlinger. Or it could be that he isn’t done at the collegiate level. He has an opportunity to return as a fifth-year starter and chase the elusive Big 12 Championship.

“No senior has ever been in this position where they were granted an extra year of eligibility”. Ehlinger responded when asked about why he hasn’t made a decision. “Also just because both options are incredible options. It’s not like there is one clear cut what is best for you and what is best for the rest of my life. There are positives to both but it is a very unique situation, but I am blessed to be in a situation where two positive events could occur.”

Ehlinger stated over the next week or two that he would sit down with his family and people that he trusts before making a decision on his future. Ehlinger currently sits second in most quarterback categories behind Colt McCoy. His final game could be against the Colorado Buffaloes or it could come next year during the 2021 college football season. For now, all of his focus is on preparing for the 2020 Valero Alamo Bowl set to kick off on Dec. 29 at 8 pm CST.
