With spring practice underway, there is a quarterback competition taking center stage in Austin. Casey Thompson and Hudson Card will be squaring off to be the starter on Sept. 4 against Louisiana.
If Thompson ends up winning, another No. 11 will be the starting quarterback for the University of Texas.
After wearing No. 8 his first three seasons on campus, Thompson has decided to switch his jersey number. He will be following up Sam Ehlinger, one of the greatest Texas quarterbacks of all time. It seems weird to have another No. 11 quarterback just after Ehlinger’s departure for the NFL.
Texas Football announced the number change via Instagram on Tuesday.

The quarterback competition will now be between No. 1 and No. 11. With spring practice underway for the first time under Steve Sarkisian, it will be the most discussed story for seven months. Thompson will come in as the favorite to win, but Card certainly has an opportunity to overtake him.
As of now, no other player has taken over Thompson’s No. 8. Punter Ryan Bujcevski, who is out of spring practice with an ACL injury, sports it for the special teams unit. No one wears it on the defensive side of the ball.
