With the college football season only months away, the Texas Longhorns are preparing for a season in a tougher division. However, they will face some familiar programs including Texas A&M, whom the Longhorns have a long history with.
While these two programs last played each other in 2011, that will change in the coming months. The Longhorns and Aggies are set to face each other in November. For many on the Longhorns roster, like quarterback Quinn Ewers, it is a matchup being circled on the calendar.
“I’m excited for it. I was super young when it went away,” Ewers told reporters on SEC media day on Thursday. “But you know, hearing family members, especially my dad, talk about it, he actually said that, him growing up, that the A&M vs. Texas game was bigger than the Red River Rivalry.”
When these programs last faced each other, Texas emerged with a win in dramatic fashion. As time expired, Justin Tucker made a field goal to give the Longhorns a 27-25 win. Colt McCoy was the Longhorns quarterback at the time, completing 16 of his 27 passes for 110 yards. The Aggies had Ryan Tannehill under center, who threw three interceptions.
Although the rosters have changed, Ewers was not afraid to add some fuel to the fire at media day. It showed that the rivalry still has some juice, and the Longhorns are excited to be back in the same conference as their in-state foe.
