Forcing three turnovers and capitalizing off them
Texas forced 19 turnovers last season, tied for the third-most in the Big 12. Chris Ash’s defense got off to a decent start against UTEP, having one interception against the Miners. Against Texas Tech, three interceptions made the difference in the outcome.
Alan Bowman was picked off twice in the first half. First by safety Chris Brown, then by nickelback Chris Adimora. Following a Red Raider surprise onside kick and an offensive three and out respectively, the timing of the two turnovers was massive for the Longhorns.
Texas’ offense made sure to take advantage of the Texas Tech mistakes by scoring 14 points via a Roschon Johnson rushing touchdown and Brenden Schooler’s lone score of the night.
Caden Sterns made the third and most important interception of the night to wrap up Texas’ win. It was his first forced turnover since Oct. 13, 2018, against Baylor.
Overall, it was a rough day defensively for Texas. Allowing 441 total yards and only getting off the field 50% of the time is never ideal.
However, intercepting Bowman three times and taking scoring valuable points off of them is why the Longhorns traveled back to Austin with a 1-0 Big 12 record.
