Texas Longhorns Football: Three reasons for the win over Texas Tech

It was tighter than expected but UT found a way in the Big 12 opener. Here are three reasons UT was able to get a victory over Texas Tech:

Sam Ehlinger’s fourth-quarter/overtime

When SaRodrick Thompson broke away for what seemed to be a crippling 75-yard touchdown, Sam Ehlinger went up to Tom Herman and said “we’re going to tie this thing up and win it in overtime.” Despite being down 15 with 3:13 left, Herman believed him.

It’s one thing for Ehlinger to say Texas was going to come back but the quarterback backed it up on the final two drives before overtime. On both sides of a Cameron Dicker onside kick, Ehlinger completed six of seven passes with 93 yards and two touchdowns, extending the game. You cannot forget about his 15 rushing yards and game-tying two-point conversion to Brennan Eagles either.

To cap it all off in overtime, Ehlinger fired the eventual winning touchdown pass to a wide-open Joshua Moore. It was his third passing touchdown within the final three minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime.

It was not quite a Heisman level moment but it sure felt close. With the rest of the Big 12 slipping up early in the season, Saturday was a cannot lose type of game for the Longhorns. Ehlinger’s play down the stretch saved what would have been an improbable collapse.
