Who was going to fill the void of star running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson was one of Texas’ primary storylines this offseason.
The Longhorns have seemingly found the answer to that question just four weeks into the season. Redshirt sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks has made the most of his opportunities thus far and has recorded over 100 rushing yards over the last two games.
Freshman running back CJ Baxter will still play a significant role in Steve Sarkisian’s offense, but Brooks has earned the right to receive the bulk of carries moving forward.
In 65 carries, Brooks has rushed for 379 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per rush. He’s also added on four catches for 64 yards and one touchdown.
Brooks is featured on On3’s top-25 running backs in the country entering Week 5, landing at No. 17. Michigan’s Blake Corum took the top spot, followed by Notre Dame’s Audric Estime, North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton, Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen and Minnesota’s Darius Taylor.
No. 3 Texas will host No. 24 Kansas on Saturday where Brooks will look to record his third consecutive 100-yard game.
