With rumors swirling of Gary Patterson potentially joining the Texas staff, and a conveniently timed job opening emerging on the school’s website, the Longhorns could be in line to steal a player from TCU.
Since the day Patterson was let go by TCU, it was reported that Texas was going to pursue former Horned Frogs head coach to join the staff in some capacity. While it wasn’t clear at first if Patterson had any interest in crossing enemy lines and suiting up in the burnt orange visor, all recent reports point to him landing some type of analyst role for the Longhorns.
Not only does this bode well for schematic reasons if true, as Texas’ defense was statistically one of the worst units in the nation last season giving up 425 yards per game and over six yards per play, it also may lead to players following Patterson to Austin.
TCU’s top pass rusher Ochaun Mathis decided to enter his name into the transfer portal on Jan. 12. Mathis has had great success under Patterson, as he earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2020 and 2021, and recorded 15.5 sacks in 38 career games.
"Speculation is already swirling that Mathis will likely follow Patterson to Austin."

With Patterson possibly joining the staff, Texas’ defense could do a complete 180 next season due to his knowledge. Adding a player of Mathis’ caliber only heightens that belief.
