Texas Football: Three storylines to watch against Texas Tech

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders will kick off their Big 12 play on Saturday. Here are three storylines to observe.

The passing game

On Sept. 12 Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger took the field in hopes of what could be the start of his Heisman campaign. He threw for five touchdowns in that game to Joshua Moore, Tarik Black, Brenden Schooler, Kai Money and Cade Brewer. Not to mention 426 yards passing. Let’s not forget he did that in a half of football. We have been waiting for the encore.

With the Texas Tech defense waiting in the wings could we see an even bigger performance? Texas likes to run the football and they have three really good running backs. One should think that they will run the ball a good amount as well. The Tech defense hasn’t been tested in the running game considering Houston Baptist primarily had to throw it to get back in the game.

There is Jordan Whittington in this game. There is no Jake Smith either, so will they throw it around as much? Given the injuries in the slot, Texas fans could see a lot of 12 personnel in this one. Cade Brewer, Jared Wiley, Malcolm Epps and Brayden Liebrock could all see plenty of action. This gives them an option to run or throw to their talented tight ends. Don’t forget the defense they are facing gave up nearly 600 yards in the air. Joshua Moore and Tarik Black should be ready to go.

If the Red Raiders defense is as porous as they were a couple Saturday’s ago, it could mean that Sam Ehlinger might just sling it around again. If you can’t stop it, why do anything else?
