Texas Football: Samuel Cosmi won’t opt out for the draft, ‘all in’ on 2020

The Texas Longhorns don’t have to worry about left tackle Samuel Cosmi opting out for the NFL Draft. He said he is all in on 2020.

With each passing day more and more players gave announced they are opting out of the 2020 college football season. Two of the bigger names to make the decision lately are LSU‘s Ja’Marr Chase and Oregon’s Penei Sewell. The latter is viewed as bonafide number one offensive tackle and top five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Then you have the Longhorns Samuel Cosmi.

Depending on which NFL Draft analyst you get your information from, Cosmi is viewed as the second or third best offensive tackle in the upcoming class. Many view him as a potential top 15 pick, or fringe top 10 based on who could be selecting in that range. Dane Brugler of the Athletic joined the Locked on Longhorns podcast before the season and weighed in on the redshirt junior.

“Everything that I have heard about Cosmi from on campus is that he is a great kid. Self made,” Brugler continues “he works at it. The coaches really like him. Teammates really like him. This is not a player you have worry about not reaching his potential. He’s gonna put every ounce of what he has into his game to try and get the most out it.”

With what could be on the table for Cosmi, he could potentially opt out of the upcoming season and focus on the draft process. However, when he was asked about that Cosmi was very firm about where his focus lies.

Cosmi’s focus is on protecting quarterback Sam Ehlinger and paving the way for the running game to make their mark in 2020. According to Pro Football Focus, Cosmi finished with an overall grade of 83.9. His pass blocking grade (89.4) and run block (76.3) led the offensive line.

If Cosmi were to opt out, who would take his spot? Well former Longhorn Donald Hawkins weighed in.
