Texas’ 2021 recruiting cycle is coming to a close with national signing day on Feb. 3.

The group is mostly shaped by Tom Herman and his staff and isn’t close to the standard that the Longhorns are used to hauling in. There have been decommitments, whiffs, and failures throughout the 2021 cycle.

With Steve Sarkisian now running the show, his term ‘All Gas No Brakes’ has carried over into the recruiting world. If Texas wants to restore itself into contention, the foundation needs to come from in-state talent.

The Longhorns have an opportunity to get some momentum going within the 2022 class on Wednesday.

Five-star defensive tackle Bear Alexander announced he would be making his commitment on Feb. 3. A product of Denton Ryan High School, Alexander is one of the prospects highlighted that Texas must sign. He is listed at 6-foot-3, 325-pounds and would fit perfectly into defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s defensive front.

Alexander released a top 16 school list just before Christmas. Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M are seen as the Longhorns’ biggest competitors.

Landing a commitment from Alexander would be the hot start Sarkisian needs to his first full recruiting class while at Texas. The five-star recruit is one of the top defensive players in the country and one of the in-state prospects Sarkisian is referring to when he mentions that the top talent cannot leave the state.

Texas signee Ja’Tavion Sanders played alongside Alexander on the defensive line at Denton Ryan, where the two are coming off a 5A-DI state championship with the Raiders. Watching highlights from that game alone will show you how special the duo could be in Austin.
