The Texas Longhorns virtually control their own destiny after Thursday night’s results.
Aside from Oklahoma, the West Virginia Mountaineers were the lone team that could prevent Texas from reaching the conference title barring a bizarre tie-breaking scenario.
The Mountaineers, should they have beaten Oklahoma with no other conference losses, would have put Texas in a head-to-head battle with the Sooners. The Longhorns lost that tie breaker on Saturday. Now, that tie-breaker scenario is no longer on the table.
We have noted the team’s very winnable remaining schedule. The only team in the Longhorns’ remaining slate with one loss or less has only played five games. Five of the six teams have two losses. There’s a strong chance half of the six teams will have to play against Texas without their starting quarterback.
Ultimately, if Texas can win its remaining games, the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff picture should take care of themselves. That said, it now seems increasingly likely that winning out will translate to a trip to Arlington for the Longhorns.
Texas will take on the Houston Cougars on Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. CT on Fox.
