Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 15 Conner Weigman

Conner Weigman has the potential to be the game-changing quarterback that Texas A&M has sorely lacked, but he’ll have to earn the starting nod in a neck-and-neck battle through camp.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a few weeks away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 15 days until kickoff, we’re looking at No. 15 for the Maroon and White: sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman.

Weigman returns for his second season after appearing in five games for the Aggies as a true freshman, having thrown for 896 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception for a 132.3 passer rating. The true freshman came in relief in Week 7 after an injury to previous starter Max Johnson ended his season early.

The sophomore signal-caller was undoubtedly thrown into a “baptism by fire” scenario last year and truth be told it was his injection into the starting lineup that gave the Aggies a boost when it came to staying competitive. By the time Weigman was needed at quarterback, the Maroon and White were 3-4, and with a bevy of injuries hindering the roster, they could have easily folded and called their 2022 season a throwaway year.

Instead, Weigman remained poised down the stretch while logging a passer rating of over 150 in three of his final four games, in particular against Ole Miss (158.2), UMass (159.7), and LSU (175.7). He recorded his highest offensive grade of the season (78.6) against Ole Miss and his second-highest (69.9) against LSU, according to Pro Football Focus, and those two foes just happen to be among the most well-rounded teams in the SEC.

Weigman’s upside and the skillset he offers are signs that point toward him being the game-changing quarterback that Texas A&M has sorely lacked. That being said, Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino won’t easily hand the starting reins to the sophomore. The phrase “earned, not given” rings loud and true in College Station, and for Weigman it means battling senior southpaw Max Johnson for the starting job.

I would personally put my money on Weigman being the starting quarterback for Week 1, but of course, I don’t have the ability of clairvoyance nor the insight into what’s going on in Fisher or Petrino’s heads. No matter how the quarterback depth chart shakes out, Weigman has already proven enough on the field to warrant consideration as the quarterback of the future for this football program.
